This compact, but powerful gadget will see your significant other through their entire day. Using voice commands, the smart device can help you set an alarm, find out what the weather is like, play music, and even shop for essentials. It connects to smart home devices, like thermostats, and syncs with smartphone apps, like Uber, too.

To buy: $40, amazon.com.

If you’re looking to score a great deal on an Alexa-enabled device before Black Friday, today brings a great reason to add one to your cart. As a part of a one-day only sale, Amazon is offering the Echo Dot for $40, 20 percent off the usual selling price.

The compact 5.7-ounce device comes in black or white, and is small enough to fit into any room. It comes with a built-in Internet and Bluetooth speaker, but can also be connected via a 3.5 mm stereo cable to play audio through larger speakers.

Alexa, Amazon’s personal assistant, comes preinstalled on the device and makes the small circular gadget more than just a music player: it can make hands-free calls to anyone in the US, Mexico, and Canada; control smart home connected products like Wemo and Phillips Hue light bulbs via voice commands; and provide traffic, weather, and news updates. Though there are already more than 25,000 “skills” like timers, event planning, and even games available to teach Alexa, new skills are being developed every day, both by Amazon and third-party developers.
