Reese Witherspoon Book Club fans, your next pick has dropped! Today, the actress and noted bookworm, announced the October selection for her Instagram community: The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman ($17; amazon.com).
Hoffman’s name may be familiar. Practical Magic ($15; amazon.com), her 1995 book about a pair of sister witches, Gillian and Sally Owens, who are haunted by a family curse that forbids them from falling in love (or their romantic partners will mysteriously die), was a bestseller. Later, it was made into a cult classic movie starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock. The prolific Hoffman is also the author of, among others, The Marriage of Opposites, The Dovekeepers, and The Museum of Extraordinary Things.
The Rules of Magic is a sort of prequel to Practical Magic, exploring the lives of Gillian and Sally’s aunts, Franny and Jet. They, too, try to escape the Owens family curse, along with their brother Vincent, in 1960s New York City. Hoffman fans will love the vivid description and plot twists.
“This story is full of magic, love, family, heartbreak and redemption,” Witherspoon said when she announced the book on Instagram. “I got so swept up in this enchanting story and I can’t wait for you all to start reading it!”
