These 3 Iconic Tokens Will No Longer Be Part of Monopoly Games
The boot, well, got the boot.
Bittersweet news, Monopoly fans: Hasbro announced today the eight tokens that will be featured as the next generation of the board game: the Scottie dog, T-rex, top hat, car, rubber ducky, cat, penguin, and battleship.
For those who spend a lot of time with Mr. Moneybags, you’ve probably noticed that the list above has some glaring omissions. The inclusion of three new tokens (T. Rex, rubber ducky, and penguin) means that they will replace three original tokens in future versions of the game. Last month, Hasbro announced that, much to the chagrin of tailoring fans, the iconic thimble would not be included in new versions of the game. The boot and wheelbarrow tokens will be joining the classic sewing tool in retirement. Both the boot and the thimble appeared in the first version of the game, released in 1935.
The change comes at the conclusion of Hasbro’s Monopoly Token Madness campaign. In January, the game company announced that they would leave the fate of all eight game tokens up to a fan vote. The classic eight tokens were pitted against 56 new tokens ranging from antique-inspired icons like a typewriter and a rotary phone, as well as modern favorites, like a full set of emojis. The campaign drew more than 4.3 million votes between January 10 and 31 from fans in more than 1000 countries.
