Shark Tank's Mark Cuban Says This Unusual Skill Could Earn You $40 an Hour
The billionaire and 'Shark Tank' judge is even making his kids learn how to do it.
Want to make a lot of money? Mark Cuban has some advice for you.
The billionaire entrepreneur, basketball team owner, and judge on Shark Tank recently shared the one skill he says could earn someone $40 an hour. And it’s a skill he says he’s making his children learn for the sake of their futures, too.
According to Cuban, the key to a profitable future is learning how to script for Alexa. Yes, your favorite smart-home device.
“Alexa skills and scripting Alexa skills is really, really easy. But everybody thinks it’s really, really hard. And so that disconnect is a great opportunity,” he said at an event at the South by Southwest conference, according to CNBC. “And so I told my kids [and] other kids, learn how to script, and just go get your neighbors and set up all of these Alexa tools and you’ll make $25, $30, $40 an hour.”
As CNBC explained, "Scripting Alexa skills" really means learning to code voice commands for the device to help it complete its intended task. Amazon has an Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) to help you get started on developing this skill.
Cuban believes artificial intelligence, in general, will be pretty important for businesses in the future.
"As big as PCs were an impact, as big as the internet was, AI is just going to dwarf it. And if you don't understand it, you're going to fall behind. Particularly if you run a business," he said. "I mean, I get it on Amazon and Microsoft and Google, and I run their tutorials. If you go in my bathroom, there's a book, Machine Learning for Idiots. Whenever I get a break, I'm reading it."
At the very least, Cuban wants people not to underestimate the impact AI will have on the future of human development.
"If you don't know how to use it and you don't understand it and you can't at least at have a basic understanding of the different approaches and how the algorithms work," he said, "you can be blindsided in ways you couldn't even possibly imagine."
So, there you have it. All you need to do is learn to code and you’ll be a billionaire like Cuban in no time. Or, at the very least, you won’t be left behind when the robots really do take over.
