My middle son has a wonderful drum teacher. His name is Josh and he is a musician and seems to have boundless energy. He is also a lot of fun, and really appreciates Middle’s sense of humor—always a plus where Middle and his mom are concerned. When the lessons began a couple of years ago, I said to my son, “That Josh is so adorable. Is he in high school?” To which Middle replied, “Mom. He’s, like, in his 20s.” Which of course made me feel about 100, but we won’t dwell on that.

Anyway, I really liked Josh a whole lot until the day that he said to me, not unkindly, “You remind me of that mom on Modern Family.” Clearly he did not mean Gloria, as I do not have a Colombian accent or a voluptuous build. Also, because I was doing something really goofy and somewhat embarrassing when he said it (stretching in my running tights on the floor of the waiting room of the music school; there was no one around and I thought, oh, what the heck), I assumed he meant Claire Dunphy.

I love that Modern Family. I agree with millions of Americans that it is the best show on TV. And I like Claire Dunphy. She is cute: That is a plus. She also really loves her family: plus. She is energetic and no-nonsense and always manages to see the humor in a situation, at least by the end of the episode. And she looks pretty good in a sleeveless dress.

However, she might be a little…crazy. So now my question is: Should I be insulted!?!
