Even if you're really ready to leave after a year, should you wait?
The short answer is: no. Job-hopping is becoming increasingly common in many industries. At least, that’s what career experts say. Maxie McCoy, of Levo League, and Bucky Keady, Vice President of Talent at Time Inc., join Sam Zabell on this week’s episode of “Adulthood Made Easy” to discuss the merits of job-hopping, the dangers of leaving too soon, and how to explain gaps on your resume.
The first question to ask yourself is “Are you running to something, or are you running away from something?” Both McCoy and Keady agree that moving from job to job is okay if the new opportunity offers fresh new challenges, or if you’ve hit a learning plateau at your current position. However, says Keady, be careful not to throw up your hands too soon in a new position. Every job requires time to acclimate and make connections, and you won’t begin to feel that sense of comfort and belonging for at least a few months.
As far as explaining any gaps to employers, just be honest. If you left your last job because you were looking for new challenges, tell that to your employer. If you were being actively recruited by multiple organizations, let them know. As long as your motive for leaving your last job was to grow as an employee and as a person, they’ll understand. And of course, when leaving, do everything you can to prepare your successor and leave your coworkers equipped to handle all tasks in your absence.
