Ask most married couples about their biggest relationship issues, and they’ll likely tell you they arose after walking down the aisle. That’s because some of the largest problems that plague marriages—frequency of sex, raising children, pooling finances, etc.—are almost impossible to prepare for during the dating stages of a relationship.

For couples looking for clarity about whether they're ready to marry, New York-based couple Jill Andres and Brook Silva-Braga may have created the perfect test-drive. The couple, who dated for several years before breaking up and getting back together, generated and participated in 40 challenges that simulated some of the issues that ultimately break up marriages, from lunching with their exes to borrowing a friend's baby. They documented every awkward, emotional, and eye-opening moment in their new book The Marriage Test: Our 40 Dates Before ‘"I Do."

On this week’s episode of “The Labor of Love,” editor Lori Leibovich speaks with Jill and Brook about what the dates taught them about how they function as a couple, which challenges they found particularly revealing, and ultimately, whether the test was successful in giving them confidence in their partnership.
