Meet Guy and Bogart.
When you hear royal dogs you’re probably thinking about the Queen's beloved, heavy-bottomed corgis, not adorable mutts. Well, now that Meghan Markle is engaged to Prince Harry, that is all about to change—the actress, lifestyle blogger, and activist is a proud mom to two lovable pups that are far from purebreds. Here, four quick things you need to know about Meghan Markle’s dogs.
Their names are Guy and Bogart.
Guy is a beagle and Bogart is a Labrador mix. According to People, Bogart was Markle’s first pup.
Both dogs are adopted.
Before Markle and Prince Harry’s relationship ramped up, the the former Suits actress frequently posted pictures of her two dogs on her Instagram using #adoptdontshop, a hashtag based around a public service campaign that focused on raising awareness about the frequent mistreatment of animals bred in puppy mills and the alarming amount of abandoned and homeless pets available to adopt in shelters.
Ellen DeGeneres convinced her to get Bogart.
Yes, even if you’re a royal-to-be, you still do what Ellen tells you to do. Markle was in a shelter when DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi walked in. Markle was playing with her destined-to-be dog when the daytime talk show host came up to her and asked her if Bogart was her dog. When Markle replied “No,” DeGeneres asked if she had a named picked out. Once Markle said, “I think I’d name him Bogart,” DeGeneres insisted that she had to take the dog home and the rest is history!
One lives with Markle in the U.K., the other stays with a friend back in Canada.
Markle once lived with both dogs, but since she begun dating Prince Harry and she’s had to split her time between the U.K. and Canada. In her first post-engagement interview, Markle disclosed that Bogart has been staying with a friend back in Canada, while Guy, the smaller of the two, has been with her in the U.K. We hope that since she is now permanently moving into Kensington Palace, Bogart will hop across the pond and be reunited with his fur mom and brother.
