At the beginning of the month we suggested the best new books to read, and it looks like Reese Witherspoon agrees with our very first choice. In a photo she shared on her Instagram account, the actress, who is famous for adapting bestselling novels into high-profile movies and TV shows, most notably with her Emmy-award winning show Big Little Lies, shared her must-read book for the month of September: Little Fires Everywhere, by Celeste Ng ($16; amazon.com).

“To say I love this book is an understatement,” she captioned the coy shot of her leafing through its pages. “It’s a deep psychological mystery about the power of motherhood, the intensity of teenage love, and the danger of perfection. It moved me to tears.”

Ng’s novel is based in a picture-perfect Cleveland suburb during the 90’s, and centers on two women—Elena, a stay-at-home mom who is the epitome of the community she belongs to, and Mia, a single mother who moves to the town with her daughter and rents an apartment from Elena and her family. As a controversial custody battle over the adoption of a Chinese American baby unfolds in the town, Mia and Elena find themselves on opposing sides of the argument, and what ensues is the unraveling of a web of secrets that will keep readers hooked until the end.

The pick is the latest selection for the #RWBookClub, an Instagram-based community curated by Witherspoon that features her book recommendations, buzzy new releases and exclusive content from the authors whose works Witherspoon herself is reading.

Ng’s novel isn’t the only one Witherspoon shared for the month of September. She also recommended best-selling author Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express ($6, amazon.com) as her September classic book pick.
