Most people barely want to speak to others when battling the flu, let alone sing the national anthem in front of millions of people, but that’s exactly what Pink did on Super Bowl Sunday. In fact, she nailed her performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The three-time Grammy Award winner said that she had been waiting to sing the song since she saw Whitney Houston perform it at the 1991 Super Bowl. At rehearsals on Saturday, Pink said in an Instagram post she was “trying to practice the flu away.” The singer caught it from her kids “who literally cough INTO MY MOUTH and rub their snot on my cheek.” But the mom of two wasn’t too mad at her kids, writing, “As far as the gremlins that got me into this mess, you can cough at me for the rest of your lives. If it’s a contest, babies, you win.” She promised her followers that she would do her best.

While most people had nothing but praise for her performance, in true Internet fashion, there were critics. Not one to back down, Pink had an epic response to one Twitter user who said she “sucks.” She tweeted, “Yeah but atleast I suck while singing our countries national anthem, and you just suck by yourself on a dirty couch. #winning.”

The flu wasn’t the only thing Pink had to deal with on Super Bowl Sunday—she also had to clarify what she spat out before her performance. Many critics reported that she spat out gum before singing the national anthem, but she clarified in a short tweet, “It was a throat lozenge.”
