9 Oscar-Nominated Films You Can Stream Right Now

The Oscar nominations were just announced and if you’re trying to Google the names of some of the films recognized, it might be time to set aside a few hours to catch up on what the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences deems as the noteworthy movies of the year. While a lot of the films are recent releases and still in theaters, there are quite a few that are currently available to stream on Amazon, Netflix, and HBO Go. Abacus: Small Enough to Jail

Nominated for Best Documentary Feature, this film follows the Sung family, Chinese immigrants, whose small bank in Chinatown, New York, is accused of mortgage fraud after the 2008 financial crisis.

Beauty and the Beast

The live-action retelling of the classic animated Disney film was a smash hit, making over $1 billion worldwide. Fans all over loved the new adaptation, which featured an all-star cast including Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Josh Gad, and Kevin Kline. It’s nominated for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.

The Big Sick

Based on screenwriters Kumail Najiani and Emily V. Gordon’s real-life relationship, The Big Sick follows an interracial couple who deal with a mysterious illness and meddling (and culturally-different) families. It is nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

The Boss Baby

The arrival of a new baby (dressed in a business suit) disrupts the life of his seven-year-old brother, Tim. Adventures ensue when it’s revealed that the Boss Baby is on a secret spy mission. It’s nominated for Best Animated Film.

Get Out

Written and directed by Key & Peele’s Jordan Peele, the film is part-horror, part-comedy, and part-commentary on race. It follows an African American man who visits the home of his white girlfriend and becomes preoccupied with the feeling that something's not right. The movie racked up nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The follow-up to the popular Marvel action film received a nomination for Best Visual Effects. Like the first film, the sequel is a lot of fun with much of the original cast returning, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel. Plus, the soundtrack can’t be beat, with classics from Fleetwood Mac, Sam Cooke, and George Harrison.

Kong: Skull Island

The reboot of the King Kong franchise follows a group that includes scientists and soldiers as they explore a mysterious island. Spoiler alert: they meet Kong and plenty of action ensues. The film is nominated for Best Visual Effects.

Last Men in Aleppo

Nominated for Best Documentary Feature, the moving documentary follows volunteer rescue workers, known as the White Helmets, who try to save the lives of the wounded during the Syrian civil war.

Mudbound

The period drama set in rural Mississippi after World War II received four nominations: Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Adapated Screenplay, and Best Original Song. The film follows two families—one black and one white—as they cope with the effects of racism and PTSD.
