This morning, Oprah announced the next book to be included in her book club, An American Marriage by Tayari Jones (Silver Sparrow, The Untelling)—and, take it from us, it's an excellent read. See, it made our list of best books of 2018, too.

In the book, newlyweds Celestial and Roy are living a blissful life in Atlanta when Roy is wrongly accused of a crime and sentenced to 12 years in prison. This moving novel follows their marriage through his incarceration, looking at how their relationship begins to unravel as Celestial is forced to build her life without Roy. Jones not only explores Roy and Celestial's marriage, but universal themes including forgiveness, betrayal, and pride (to buy: $16; amazon.com).

“I love this title because the novel redefines the traditional American love story," Oprah said in a video posted to Twitter. "It’s really a love triangle and places it inside a world that a lot of people don’t know about, but impacts all of us in really big ways. And I think you’ll come away with greater empathy and understanding, but even if you don’t, it’s just a great read.”

“Thank you, Oprah, for extending your hand to me and my new novel, An American Marriage. I am honored to join your book club and connect hearts and minds by raising our voices and telling our stories,” Jones wrote on Twitter, along with a photo of her with Oprah.

Other recent selections for the book club included Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue and The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, which also won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Once you’ve finished this incredible novel, make sure to read one of the other recently released titles that we can’t stop raving about.
