The Silver Star, by Jeannette Walls

My name is Benice Atufunwa. I’m the production assistant at and your book-club leader for this month. My job mostly entails putting new content on our website for our wonderful readers to enjoy every day.

I’m really excited for this month’s book, The Silver Star. As someone with three sisters (and a brother!), I love stories that revolve around relationships between sisters, as this one does. There’s no other relationship in the world quite like them; our siblings have such a huge hand in shaping the people we become and the lives we lead (whether we realize it or not). I’m very curious to see how the relationship between the narrator, 12 year-old Jean (or “Bean,” as she’s called), and her older sister, Liz, survives their drama-queen mother, recluse of an uncle, and the airing of family secrets.

This is a quick read, so this month’s book club will be only a two-week affair; that way, you don’t have to spend the precious few days we have left of summer with your nose in a book, if you hear your bike or tennis racquet or grill calling. We’ll go over chapters 1 through 26 on August 9 and the remainder of the book on August 16.

See you next week!

P.S.: It’s no secret that we are big fans of The Light Between Oceans. If you are, too, here’s exciting news: This month, author M.L. Stedman returns briefly to the States from Australia for a short book tour. If you’re lucky, she may be appearing at a bookstore near you.
