See “Public Enemies”
This cat-and-mouse thriller directed by Michael Mann (The Insider) is already cashing in: On its opening weekend, it grossed $26.1 million. The movie’s two draws: Johnny Depp (right), who plays infamous Great Depression–era bank robber John Dillinger, and Christian Bale as the federal agent hot on his trail. While the ending is no mystery, the ride is well worth it.

Read “Whacked,” by Jules Asner
The wife of director Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Thirteen) and former E! News Live host writes what she knows: a tale about Hollywood. Her debut novel, just out in paperback, stars Dani Hale, a writer on CSI-esque TV drama Flesh and Bone, who’s―fittingly―obsessed with murder and crime. When she finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her, Dani unravels. Too bad her boyfriend wasn’t smart enough to change his e-mail password.
The romantic comedy starring Zoey Deschanel (Yes, Man) doesn’t hit theaters until next week, but no matter: On July 14, you can pick up the movie’s stellar sound track, featuring songs by acts new (Feist, Regina Spektor) and old (Hall & Oates, the Smiths). Bonus: There’s a track by French First Lady Carla Bruni.
Highlights of the Emmy-winning comedy series’ sixth season: Actor Vince (Adrian Grenier) is gearing up for the premiere of the Martin Scorsese–directed film Gatsby, manager Eric (Kevin Connolly) considers―gasp!―moving into his own house, and guest stars like Tom Brady, Jay Leno, and David Schwimmer stop by. (Premieres July 12 at 10:30 pm EDT.)
