The beloved Jeopardy! host has a storied career.
Yesterday afternoon, Jeopardy!, the daily syndicated trivia show, shared a video on its YouTube page with host Alex Trebek announcing that he would be taking medical leave from the show after recovering from brain surgery. He had a fall in October and underwent surgery over the holiday break to remove blood clots on the brain. According to Trebek, his “prognosis is excellent,” and he hopes to “be back in the studio taping more Jeopardy! programs very, very soon.” In honor of the decorated host's recovery, here are four facts you might not have known about him.
Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek was born on July 22, 1940, meaning, at time of writing, Trebek is 77 years old. He was born in Sudbury, Ontario, and attended the University of Ottawa, earning a degree in philosophy. The Alumni Hall at the university was named in his honor in 2015, and he was given an Honorary Doctorate, as well.
He’s one of the highest paid hosts on television.
Wondering how much Alex Trebek makes as the host of Jeopardy? According to a 2014 article by The Hollywood Reporter, Trebek’s salary is reportedly $10 million a season.
He’s a Guinness World Record holder.
Jeopardy first premiered in 1964, with the host Art Fleming. The original version of the show aired for ten years. It was brought back in a syndicated version in 1984, with Trebek as its host. Since then, he has appeared in more than 7,300 episodes. In 2014, he became the Guinness World Record holder for “most game show episodes hosted by the same presenter,” when he hosted his 6,829th episode. Trebek is going on his 34th year hosting Jeopardy and will remain the host until at least 2020, when his current contract ends.
He’s not a foodie.
Though, Alex Trebek’s son, Matt Trebek, co-owns Oso, a Mexican restaurant in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood, he didn’t get his love for food from his dad. In a 2016 interview with Fordham Magazine, Matt’s alma mater, he said his dad “would be fine eating chicken, white rice, and broccoli for the rest of his life.
