The 2020 Etsy Wedding Trend Report Is Here—and It's All About Personalization
Etsy has declared 2020 the “year of purpose”—here’s how the theme is translating into weddings.
A wedding is nothing if not a reflection of the couple’s personalities and love story. To-be-weds today make a conscious effort to infuse meaning into every little detail, from the wedding party to the vows. So it’s fitting that resident Etsy trend expert, Dayna Isom Johnson, has dubbed 2020 the “year of purpose,” a design ethos permeating everything from interior design to fashion—and, of course, weddings.
What does that mean, exactly? Johnson says every wedding decision is made by asking questions like, “What’s the story behind it?” and “What does this actually mean to me?” Couples want invitations with individuality, decor with a backstory, attire with deeply personal flair. Their wedding is their day—and it should feel like it.
So what’s in store for 2020 weddings, based on Etsy's findings? Here’s how Johnson predicts couples will express their individuality with purpose this year.
Etsy is seeing a surge in interest for elevated, '70s-inspired elements. Case in point: Searches for details like '70s–themed invitations and disco ball decor have increased noticeably since last year. This decade's relaxed, optimistic outlook and emphasis on individuality make it a favorite to invoke at celebrations. Look out for disco decor, retro color palettes (like orange and chartreuse, Etsy’s color of the year), and nature-inspired headpieces, to name a few.

One of Johnson’s favorite trends is the rise of the wedding party that speaks to you—not just to tradition. Your dog can absolutely be your ring bearer; your best friend can be man of honor; your grandmother can join the wedding party. Let the people you love most play the roles you want them to play on your day, regardless of old-school conventions.

Sustainable weddings are on the rise. With that in mind, the desire for vintage rings keeps growing. “Shoppers are opting for vintage wedding and engagement rings, giving new life to heirloom-quality pieces that can’t be found anywhere else,” Etsy says. Bigger picture, many Etsy shoppers are hoping to make more sustainable wedding purchases overall, searching for reused, recycled, or reclaimed items (think: vintage veils and rings made from recycled metals).

Ball gowns and slip dresses aren’t everyone’s idea of the perfect wedding day wear. For those who want to feel like themselves on their special day, say hello to the chic and modern power suit. They’re stylish, empowering, unique, and comfortable. For the best of both worlds, choose a suit for another wedding event, like the rehearsal dinner or reception.

Etsy’s 2020 trend report says coordinated wedding coats and jackets aren’t going anywhere. Personalized jackets give couples the perfect photo op and post-wedding keepsake, thanks to creative options like hand-painted and neon light-up denim, and embroidered leather.
