Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are making headlines as their love story approaches its "happily ever after." But in their engagement interview with BBC, the prince and former Suits actress and humanitarian gushed about getting to know (and falling for) each other away from the spotlight. In just over 20 minutes, the couple talked about their first date, the late Princess Diana, the proposal and of course, how Queen Elizabeth's corgis feel about Markle.
As we await more details about their highly-anticipated spring nuptials, Real Simple has selected our favorite, most heartwarming moments from the interview.
They also struggle to perfect the classic roasted chicken recipe.
“Just a cozy night … just roasting chicken,” Meghan Markle said of the night Prince Harry got down on one knee.
“Trying to roast a chicken,” Harry added.
Markle had one question before a friend set them up on a blind date.
“It was definitely a setup,” Markle said. “It was a blind date … I had one question: ‘Well, is he nice?’ because if he wasn’t kind, it didn’t seem like it would make sense.”
Their third date was a five-day camping trip in Botswana.
“It was I think about three, maybe four weeks later (after the first date) that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana,” Harry said. “And we camped out with each other under the stars … she came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic.”
Prince Harry had never watched Suits.
“I had never even heard about her,” he said, later adding, “I had never watched Suits, I had never heard of Meghan before, and I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her. And there she was sitting there. I was like, ‘Okay, well, I’m gonna really have to up my game here.’”
The Queen’s corgis instantly fell in love with Meghan, too.
“The corgis took to you straight away,” Harry said.
“That’s true,” Markle replied.
“I’ve spent the last 33 years being barked at. This one walks in, absolutely nothing…” he said.
“Just laying on my feet during tea. It was very sweet,” she said.
“Just wagging tails and I was just like, ‘Ugh,’” Harry joked.
Prince Harry thinks the late Princess Diana would have adored his bride-to-be.
“I think they would be thick as thieves, without question,” he said. “I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, so excited for me. But then, as I said, she would have been best friends with Meghan.”
After talking about how much he missed his mother, whose diamonds are two of three stones comprising Markle’s ring, Markle said, “She’s with us.”
“I’m sure she’s with us,” Harry said. “Jumping up and down somewhere else.”
