How I'm Overcoming My "Clutter Blocks"

As someone who has moved every eight months for the past five years, I didn't think I had an issue with clutter. I thought I had downsized as much as possible from moving so much, but after reading this book I came to a realization that I was avoiding certain things in my life. I actually found myself relating to more than one clutter block on the list!

I took the clutter quiz to see where I fell on the spectrum and the feedback for my score was both helpful and attainable. I took her advice and have scheduled Sundays to be my tune-up days where I take some time to tidy up my home to ensure I stay clutter-free and don't enter the "danger zone". Before I buy a new shirt or another pair of shoes, I stop and think it through to decide if it will really add value to my life. Most of the time that answer is no. Going through my belongings and facing my emotional blocks was almost therapeutic; once I purged a small problem area of my home (my closet and shoe rack) I felt like a weight was lifted from my body. And that feeling has given me the motivation I need to take on my next project.

The majority of my emotional blocks aren't in my own home, but rather at my parents' house. Although I've been moving a lot over the years and downsizing on what I take with me, I still have a room full of old toys, books, clothes, and more waiting to be purged. I think this comes back to clutter block number one (my stuff keeps me in the past) and block number three (the stuff I'm avoiding). Most of these belongings are from my childhood and have no purpose taking up space in their home—which also means I'm burdening them with clutter block number six (trapped with other people's stuff). McCubbin isn't kidding when she says the root of your clutter usually starts three steps back.

McCubbin's book is written in a way that kept my attention throughout the entire read. She uses bulleted lists to keep ideas concise and shares short stories of past clients that are actually relatable. What stuck out to me the most is that my expectations were never set too high. Within the first 100 pages she makes it very clear that this process isn't to transform a home into an Instagram sensation, but to create a livable space that makes the reader comfortable and happy.
