The Murphy bed (wall bed, fold-down bed, etc.) was the brainchild of William L. Murphy. The idea came to him at the turn of the 20th century in his cramped San Francisco apartment. Murphy didn’t invent the folding bed, but he did innovate the way it folds; using a closet doorjamb and a set of hinges, Murphy built a pivot system that allowed it to fold vertically and sit against the wall.
