Learn more about the leather difference below 100% Genuine Top Grain Premium Soft Aniline Leather Split Grain Leather. On a very basic level, leather furniture consists of Split grain or Top Grain. Split Grain is the leather type used on mid price reproduction furniture and is sold in the U.S and Canada as 100% Genuine, Italian or European leather. Split Grain is the underside of the hide that has been separated from the surface or “top” of the hide. While genuine leather, Split Grain leather does not have the natural surface grain of the cowhide. A topical layer of insoluble pigment is applied to the surface of split grain leather, which is then stamped or “grain embossed” to imitate the surface appearance of actual Top Grain leather. By law, in the U.K and Australia split grain can no longer be sold as 100% leather as the surface area is not the natural grain but insoluble pigment. 100% will often accompany the description of the leather meaning 100% of the furniture's surface (back, sides, cushions) are covered in split grain leather. Top Grain Aniline European leather. One of Kardiel's Quality Differences. This item is upholstered in premium Top Grain Aniline European leather. Top Grain is the actual surface of the cowhide. While no one knows the actual number, a small percentage of furniture sold today is upholstered in Premium Top Grain Aniline leather. Some claim as low as 5%. Aniline dying describes one of the two processes in which color is applied to the leather with the dye penetrating the leather and extending beyond the surface, into the leather itself. For modern furniture requiring a clean aesthetic, Top Grain Aniline Leather is both “liquid vat” (deep penetrating) and surface dyed to achieve the main color selection and to conceal uneven tones and blemishes in the hide. Top grain aniline is the softest leather and naturally breaths well. Because Top Grain refers to the actual surface of the animal hide it presents a natural leather appearance you would expect. While it is true that raw Top Grain Aniline absorbs spills easier, Furniture grade Top Grain leather features a stain resistant treatment making it exceptional for everyday lower maintenance use. Although rare, nothing wears, looks or feels better than premium Aniline Top Grain leather. Over time it patinas and becomes more comfortable versus wearing out. FLORENCE KNOLL SOFA HISTORY The Florence Knoll Sofa, Chair and Loveseat is a design icon. The original design was conceived in 1956 by Florence Knoll, a world class architect and designer. It is a relatively simple design as it was originally meant to complement the classic innovations of Saarinen and Bertoia. The Knoll philosophy of furniture design solves practical and aesthetic design problems. The philosophy results in minimalist beauty, lasting durability and luxurious comfort in one complete package. It is well known that Knoll studied and collaborated with Mies Van Der Rohe. Knoll designed the classic trio using a durable stainless steel frame with minimal materials. Cubic cushions featuring compressed buttons in a purposeful and logical layout provide style and comfort to the supporting thin armed, minimalist frame. Do you notice the similarities in design philosophy to the Mies Van der Rohe's Barcelona Chair? The Knoll Sofa, Love and Chair is becoming even more popular as its minimalist yet functional design fits perfectly into todays modern home. History of the Designer, Florence Knoll Florence Knoll is an American architect and furniture designer. Florence Knoll's design flair began at the age of 14 when she designed her first home. A minimalist to the core, she pioneered the concept of open plan living and working spaces. The question Knoll asked prior to the design phase of the Classic Knoll Sofa & Chair: How can a piece of furniture support luxurious upholstery, yet take up as little space as possible? Her American interpretation of minimalist, rationalist design theories is clearly evident in her pieces. In her early years, Knoll studied under Mies van der Rohe. Some say a quick glance at the Knoll Sofa and Chair reveals the influence of Mies van der Rohe via his iconic Barcelona Lounge Chair. It is true that both the Knoll sofa and chair share a similar square button impressed cushion design. Many view the Knoll full size sofa, love and chair collection as the expression in full scale living room furniture what the Barcelona design is to the lounge category. read more
