Real Simple answers your questions.
Q. What’s the best way to water my indoor plants when I’m on vacation?
Lavallette, New Jersey
A. Leave them in a water-filled sink or tub. For trips of up to a week, begin by thoroughly watering plants. "Then place a towel at the bottom of a bathtub or a sink and fill with about two inches of water," says Barbara Pleasant, author of The Complete Houseplant Survival Manual (Storey Books, $15, amazon.com). Sit the plants in the tub or the sink and they’ll soak up the water. Away for longer? Call on that trusty neighbor.
