Real Simple answers your questions.
Q. What should I look for in a moisturizer now that I'm over 40?
A. So many things change as we get older, it's no shock that our skin does as well. If you're over 35 consider the following things when looking for the right daytime moisturizer.
First, always look for something that contains an SPF of at least 15. Suncreens are essential no matter what your age, but as our skin matures they becomes a particularly important step in the fight against the arrival of fine lines and wrinkles.
Second, do you have any skin "issues"? For instance, is your skin too dry, too oily/acne prone or extremely sensitive/prone to rosacea? If so, here are some basic guidelines to follow:
For oily/acne prone skin, look for a moisturizing lotion or gel since creams will be too occlusive and may clog pours. Also consider a product that has salicylic acid to help clear the acne.
For very dry skin, ingredients like hyaluronic acid and Niacinimide help reduce water loss. Look for a comforting light cream that may also include ingredients like glycerin and dimethicone.
If you have sensitive skin moisturizers with ingredients like green tea, feverfew and Vitamin C may help calm irritation.
For dry skin: Clinique Superdefense Triple Action Moisturizer SPF 25
For oily /acne prone skin: Neutrogena Anti-Wrinkle Anti-Blemish Cream (must wear a separate SPF)
For sensitive skin: Aveeno Ultra-Calming Moisturizer with SPF
