We’ve all been there: You’re eating the messiest food possible (a meatball sub, a plate of buffalo wings), when you accidentally drop it right on your living room rug. Don’t panic—and definitely don’t try to rub it clean. Instead, blot the spot with a clean white towel, Smallin Kuper suggests. She also only recommends using stain-removal products certified by the Carpet and Rug Cleaning Institute, such as Simple Green or Spot Shot. “The wrong type of spot remover may initially clean the spot, but leave a film that will attract dirt so that the stain will seem to reappear,” she warns. If you don’t have a store-bought stain remover on hand, you can whip one up, Johnson says. For the safest solution, mix together one teaspoon dishwashing liquid, two tablespoons white vinegar, and one cup water. Blot the solution on the spot, then blot dry or place a fan near the area. If you’re anything like us, you’ve most likely carried around a little extra stress this holiday season—beyond your family’s regular routine. Between holiday parties, family events, and that never-ending list of gifts to buy, the last few months have no doubt taken their toll on you and your home.

The good news is that the New Year is here, and with it, the opportunity to start fresh. Here, we give you seven tweaks to make at home so you can have a more restful start to 2018.

Create a personal playlist.

A soundtrack filled with soothing songs that you can cue up as soon as you walk in the door can make all the difference in those first few moments after a long day.

Try an aromatherapy diffuser.

Filling your home with scented essential oils, such as lavender and ylang ylang, can have an instant calming affect on your mood.

Create a command center.

Whether it’s a dedicated desk or a single shelf hung by the front door, prepping yourself with everything you need to tackle the day ahead will keep you cool, calm, and collected.

Clear the clutter.

Tackle the junk drawer, the kitchen pantry, or any other untidy space that causes you stress, and clean it up! An organized space will give you a sense of accomplishment and make looking for things much easier.

Update photos.

Family and friends are an instant source of comfort and love. Having their smiling faces and happy memories front and center enables you to tap into that source any time you need a lift.

Bring nature in.

Fresh flowers are known to elevate a sour mood and inspire a feeling of happiness. Plus, their fragrance is a comforting  reminder that you’re doing something good for yourself.

Introduce color.

Your mood can be instantly lifted with the addition of a bold hue or tamed by a soothing shade. A perky pink pillow or a cuddly throw in calming shades of blue can change your outlook.
