The Biggest Mistake You’re Making When Renovating Your Home, According to the Property Brothers
According to Drew and Jonathan Scott, this one big task is actually cheaper if you leave it to the pros.
While the Property Brothers have done over 280 renovations, their most recent project, Drew and his fiancée Linda’s 1920s-era historic home, was no easy job. The brothers’ newest show premiering on November 22nd, Property Brothers at Home: Drew’s Honeymoon House, goes behind the scenes of Drew and Linda’s experience working with Jonathan on renovating their Los Angeles home in preparation for their wedding. Real Simple asked Drew, Jonathan, and Linda about the renovation and the one thing homeowners should never DIY.
According to the Drew and Jonathan, homeowners should save their energy and hard-earned money on mudding and drywall. They said that so many homeowners take this overwhelming task into their own hands, throw away about $5,000, but in the end the job is uneven and will affect resale value. Future buyers will immediately recognize that it’s not professionally done and walk away. The last thing you want to do is put doubt in the buyer’s mind, so save your time, and money, and let the pros handle it with ease.
Drew and Linda also have a tip for those of you with a historic home in your hands. “A lot of people don’t realize it costs more money to restore than renovate,” Drew said. You’ll also have to take into consideration that you’ll need approval from the city for exterior changes.
