Contrary to popular belief, feng shui isn't a way to decorate or a Chinese style of decor. Both a science and an art, feng shui is all about energy and attraction. The purpose is to create a space that triggers specific emotions and feelings.

Feng shui is especially important for a home office because unlike a corporate space, you have complete control over it's design. There isn't just one way to feng shui an office; it depends on the person, their professional goals, and what the room is used for. According to feng shui expert Ashley Cantley, "Feng shui can increase business by drawing in more clients, creating happier employees, and generating more wealth."

A feng shui office can be key to a highly productive day, a more successful career, and ultimately, a better life. Here are seven expert tips for creating a feng shui home office.

Select The Optimal Feng Shui Office Layout

The desk should face where you can see who is coming and going from the room. "This is a power position and it equals major success," Cantley says. "Your back facing the door creates vulnerability and anxiety."

But not all office layouts allow for the ideal position of the desk. If you have no choice but to have your back facing the door, Cantley suggests hanging a mirror in front of your workspace so you can see who is entering and exiting the door. "Ideally, your back will be facing a wall (not a window or other furniture like a bookcase)," she says.

Choose Your Desk Wisely

The single most important piece of furniture in any home office is the desk. Cantley strongly suggests making sure your desk is sturdy above all else (so avoid a leaning desk, for example). Whatever style of furniture you choose, make sure it is in good repair, the legs are even, and there is absolutely no wobbling.

Cantley says a wood desk is ideal because it's a natural material that is also sturdy. The Morris Writing Desk ($499; crateandbarrel.com) is a beautiful and functional feng shui choice. It features two drawers for storage so the surface can stay neat with any clutter tucked away. In addition to chocolate brown, it's also available in gray, which may be a better color for those who need to stimulate creativity or work in creative fields.

Pick The Best Feng Shui Office Colors

Colors are very important for feng shui, especially in a room like an office. The colors you choose should depend on what kind of work you are doing. For example, the colors an accountant would likely choose for feng shui probably wouldn't be as conducive to productivity as they would be for a graphic designer.

According to Cantley, "White or pastels help stimulate creativity, green represents growth, black represents the water element and is associated with money, while purple represents clarity. If you feel stressed, go with earth tones."

Don't Forget Plants

"My absolute favorite plant for feng shui right now is the Pilea Peperomioides ($8; etsy.com) plant, which is also called the Chinese money plant," says Cantley. "The round leaves look like little coins and it's beautiful. It has become quite trendy on Instagram the past few years."

Cantley also recommends any plant that has a rounded leaf. A succulent set ($58; shopterrain.com) is very feng shui and makes an ideal desk accessory.

"Flowering plants (purple and red) are also good choices," she says. An orchid fits the bill here, too.

Improve Lighting

Lighting is just one way to improve your home office feng shui. A well-lit office is important because working in a dark office can be draining. While an abundance of natural light is ideal, all office spaces need supplementary lighting from lamps. No matter what style lamp you choose, Cantley says it's best to avoid fluorescent light bulbs because they zap your energy.

An Arched Floor Lamp ($280; wayfair.com) can help reduce stress because the shade is an earth tone. Additionally, the texture of the material provides a soft glow.

Hang Inspiring Art

Art is very important for a feng shui office. "Hang art that inspires you," Cantley says. "Place images of people you admire and aspire to be like and use positive mantras painted or hanging on the wall."

This Do What Makes Your Soul Happy ($32; society6.com) is a wonderful choice.

Scent is another aspect of feng shui. Cantley recommends using citrus essential oils, which can be very helpful on long, stressful days. This decorative Aroma Om diffuser ($99; saje.com) disperses essential oils into the air ultrasonically.
