Interior design trends are all over the place, but landscape design ideas and trends are a little more difficult to find, and even trickier to put into action. Maybe it should be the other way, though, considering a home’s exterior attractiveness, or curb appeal, is one of the first things people notice about a home. A lack of curb appeal can give people a bad impression of your home, even if the interiors are stunning—which is where smart landscaping ideas come in.

Landscape design ideas for any area of the yard—or even a balcony or terrace, for apartment- or townhome-dwellers—can completely transform the look and feel of a home, even before visitors step foot inside. (Coming home to a beautiful yard every day can be a great mood-booster, too.) Changing trends can make maintaining a good-looking yard difficult—a dated landscape design can do more harm than good for curb appeal—but reports such as the top landscape design trends of 2019 from the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) make it a little easier.
