You don’t need massive square footage to create the organized entryway of your dreams.

Whether you live in a home that doesn’t have a square foot to spare or you’re moving your grown kid into their first (so small!) apartment, it’s possible to create an entryway in a small space. Just rethink what you already own to make pieces do double duty, then opt for a small-scale rug and wall hooks that won’t take up any floor space. Suddenly, a teeny-tiny entryway will feel more like a full-blown foyer.

Use a Shelving Unit as a Shoe Rack

If you already have a console table, bench, or shelving unit near your entryway, make it work a little harder by devoting the bottom shelf to shoe storage. Just a few pairs can be stored out in the open, but if you’d prefer to conceal the clutter, you can hide them inside attractive storage bins. (If you're using bins, go ahead and add one for gloves, hats, or any other gear you tend to grab on your way out the door.)

Make a Mini Message Center

While a larger entryway can accommodate a family command station, a small space will benefit from the simplified version: a tiny notepad and a pen. It’s the perfect spot to jot down reminders or shopping lists for a roommate or family member, and its small size makes it easy to throw into a purse and tote along to the store.

Create a Cozy Landing

A big entryway often demands a grand runner, but a small space calls for a modest two-by-three foot area rug. Look for one that’s durable enough to withstand a parade of family members and guests, but colorful enough to make a friendly first impression.

Swap the Bench for a Small Stool

Many homes have an entryway bench for putting on shoes. In a tiny entryway, a stool can serve the same purpose, while taking up much less space. Plus, a lightweight stool can easily be moved to another room to serve as an extra seat or a step stool as needed.

Install Wall Hooks

Skip the freestanding coat rack in favor of a few space-saving wall hooks. They provide the perfect spot to hang a purse or scarf, while taking advantage of vertical space.
