Zebra Stripes + Cheetah Spots
Use animal prints the way they appear in the wild: surrounded by natural colors, such as taupe and brown. Include modern interpretations (like the pillows on the ottoman) to lighten the mood, and work in lots of texture for coziness. Subtle furniture tones down the glamour, and a bit of sweeping greenery feels both exotic and inviting.

Floral + Gingham + Trellis
Indulge in a gorgeous explosion of flowers, but temper it with orderly pillows: In single colors with plenty of open space, giant gingham and a refined trellis pattern hit a country note while offering relief from the botanicals. Unfussy white furniture (note the trellis base of the coffee table) makes an elaborate floral print feel cool and modern rather than dowdy. And it plays up the white background in the wallpaper, adding more air.

Toile + Toile + Stripes
On its own, toile—a busy scenic print featuring people and animals in action—can feel English-formal. Layered and combined with crisp stripes, it's chic and playful. Try one large toile in rich, eye-catching tones (see the drapes) plus two small versions with muted backgrounds. Unify the trio with a striped rug and pillows in colors that connect with all three toiles.

Ikat + Dot + Paisley
For energy and movement, juxtapose swirling, ethnic ikat prints in saturated tones: one dark and dense (here, the curtains) and one lit up with large swaths of white (the settee). Paisley touches echo the curves of ikat—they're natural mates. And a polka-dot pillow is a dash of sobriety at any lively tonal party.

Zigzag + Scroll + Geometrics
You can load up a room with graphic black-and-white patterns if you include softeners, like scrollwork pillows, a rich cocoa sofa, and hits of juicy jewel tones (purple, teal, even the emerald green of a plant). A crazy wallpaper works best on just one wall, rather than four, and should be behind the main seating area. You want to enjoy it on your way into the room but not stare at it all the time.
