Although it doesn't acquire as much dirt and debris as carpet, hardwood flooring still requires regular cleaning in between mopping. But before you reach for the old broom and dust pan, consider a cordless vacuum designed to effortlessly clean hardwood floors without causing damage.

We tested 16 cordless vacuums in our Lab to determine which ones were best for hardwood floors. Each vacuum was evaluated for factors such as runtime, noise level, effectiveness, maneuverability, and overall value. We also spoke with Brett Miller, vice president of technical standards, training, and certification for the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) and Holly Lightfoot, director of merchandising at LL Flooring.

Miller says regularly cleaning hardwood floors can actually help to avoid potential scratches by preventing dirt and debris from dragging across the floor. But you still have to be careful to choose a vacuum that won’t damage hardwoods. “The biggest factor when it comes to buying a vacuum that’s hardwood-friendly is finding an option with a soft floor attachment or soft padding, with no beater bar or firm bristle brushes,” says Lightfoot.

What Stands Out
  • This lightweight and easy-to-maneuver vacuum is designed specifically for hard floors.

What Could Be Improved
  • It is not compatible with carpet.

As its name implies, the Dyson Omni-Glide+ is designed to glide over hardwood floors with ease, picking up dust and other debris without causing damage. Our testers were particularly wowed with how lightweight and easy this Dyson was to maneuver, especially given how powerful the suction is. “The swivel on the floor brush of the vacuum really helped with the ease of maneuvering and made my vacuuming super easy,” says one tester.

Keep in mind that the Omni-Glide+ is only meant for use on hard floors, as it doesn’t come with a beater brush of any kind. But this doesn’t make it any less effective on hardwoods. In our testing, the vacuum picked up 98 percent of debris within a 1-minute window, both on hardwood floors and stairs. The Double Fluffy cleaner head is covered in a soft nylon to capture large debris, while the anti-static carbon fiber filaments remove fine dust. Other attachments include a crevice tool and a mini motorized brush head for use on upholstery and other small surfaces. Plus, this vacuum can easily transform into a handheld vacuum cleaner for above-floor cleaning: “It takes zero effort to pick it up, even to reach the high self of the bookcase,” says one tester of this lightweight vacuum.

One trade-off of the vacuum’s lightweight and compact design is that it has a relatively small dustbin capacity at just 0.2 liters, which led our testers to have to empty the canister frequently during our testing. This, combined with its 20-minute battery life, makes the Omni-Glide+ better suited for quick cleanups and small spaces, as opposed to whole-home cleaning. To empty the canister, simply use the point-and-shoot mechanism to eject the contents directly into a trash can. Our testers did note that some hair became tangled in the dustbin, and they had to use their hands to remove it.

Finally, the vacuum comes with a washable lifetime filter, as well as a two-year warranty. It's more expensive than most of the other cordless vacuum cleaners we tested, but if you have mostly hardwood flooring in your home, the Dyson Omni-Glide+ may be well worth the investment.

What Stands Out
  • This affordable cordless vacuum works well on multiple surface types.

What Could Be Improved
  • It only comes with one attachment.

Unlike our best overall pick, this cordless vacuum from Black + Decker is designed to clean a variety of surfaces, including hardwood, tile, and carpet. This is thanks to its angled floorhead that features three different suction levels, so you can adjust your suction level to whichever floor type you’re cleaning. And if you’re nervous about scratching your hardwood floors, the spinning brush roll has an on/off switch, so you can use it with the suction only. In our testing, this vacuum picked up 99.8 percent of debris within a 1-minute window and was able to suck up all the wig hair in just 13 seconds without any getting tangled around the roller brush, making this a great option for pet owners, too.

Our testers found it easy to maneuver this vacuum around furniture, and note that the detachable hand vacuum is lightweight and easy to use. During our testing, the battery lasted for nearly 29 minutes on the lowest setting—the second longest battery life of all the vacuums on our list. Plus, it can stand upright on its own without needing to lean against a well, and it comes with LED floorhead lights that illuminate the cleaning path as you vacuum.

What Stands Out
  • This vacuum comes with a HEPA filter and a removable battery to extend its runtime.

What Could Be Improved
  • Additional attachments intended for hard floors must be purchased separately.

Our testing proved the Samsung Jet 75 to be ideal for cleaning pet hair from hardwood floors, as it removed 100 percent of the hair from the hardwood floors during our testing. And, it’s the only vacuum on our list that comes with a HEPA filter for trapping at least 99.97 percent of particles as small as 0.3 microns, including pet dander and allergens. We did have some issues with hair getting wrapped around the brush roll, but fortunately, it was easy enough to remove the brush roll and clean it as needed.

The Jet 75 also comes with both a long crevice tool and a mini motorized tool—the latter is ideal for lifting stubborn pet hair from small areas, such as upholstery and stairs. Additional attachments are sold separately, and include the Spinning Sweeper and Soft Brush, both of which are intended for hard floors.

This vacuum comes with four different power modes, and the spinning brush roll can be turned off for use on delicate hardwood floors (although, we didn’t have any issues with the spinning brush roll scratching hardwood during our testing). You can shuffle through these settings using the digital display, which will also alert you of any airflow issues or blockages. The Jet 75 weighs just six pounds, and we found it easy to maneuver around furniture and tight corners. Plus, it comes with a removable battery, so you can swap it out for a new one without having to recharge (just keep in mind that the second battery is sold separately). If you know you want both batteries, the Jet 75 Complete comes with two batteries included.

What Stands Out
  • This lightweight stick vacuum doubles as a handheld vacuum for both spot cleanings and deeper cleanings.

What Could Be Improved
  • It's not able to run for more than 20 minutes without needing to charge.

Given its size, this lightweight stick vacuum features impressive suction power and versatility. In our testing, it picked up 100 percent of the Cheerios, popcorn kernels, and coffee grounds in just 10 seconds. Plus, the detachable hand vacuum can be used to clean up spills or small messes in between deeper cleanings. Additionally, it comes with a motorized pet tool and a crevice tool for cleaning car interiors and upholstery. But what really makes it stand out for hardwoods is its specialized hard floor attachment and mop module, so you can wipe floors clean with the damp mopping cloth as you vacuum. And our testers found this vacuum to seamlessly transition between different surface types.

Keep in mind that this vacuum is not designed for whole-home cleaning, as it has a limited runtime and dust capacity. But for everyday messes and spills, this is a versatile option that will keep you from lugging heavy appliances around your home.

What Stands Out
  • This cordless vacuum has a long runtime and large dust capacity.

What Could Be Improved
  • It doesn't come with any attachments for hard-to-reach areas.

This vacuum features the convenience of a cordless vacuum with the longevity of an upright vacuum, thanks to its long runtime and high dust capacity—both of which are the highest on our list. And if you have both carpet and hardwood floors in your home, this makes an excellent choice, because it proved to be effective on both surfaces in our testing, and you can easily switch the spinning brush head on or off as you transition between the two. And unlike most cordless stick vacuums, this one can stand upright on its own.

Although the swivel head design makes it easy to navigate around furniture, it can be difficult to get into tight spaces with this vacuum because it doesn’t come with any attachments, such as a crevice tool. This also means it cannot be used for cleaning upholstery or high shelving. But if you’re okay sticking with just floors, this sturdy cordless vacuum boasts a long enough battery life to complete a deep clean in one charge.

Final Verdict

Our top pick is the Dyson Omni-Glide+ because it gave an impressive performance on both hardwood floors and stairs in our testing. What’s more, it’s super lightweight and comes with a soft nylon floor head designed with delicate hardwood flooring in mind.

For a more budget-friendly option, the Black + Decker Powerseries Extreme Cordless Stick Vacuum is just as effective as more expensive models at sucking up debris from hardwood flooring, including hair, and can be used on carpet and tile as well. Plus, the spinning brush has an on/off switch, so you can use just the suction when vacuuming hardwoods.

Our Testing Process

We acquired 16 cordless vacuums and put them through a series of tests in our Lab in order to determine which ones are the best for use on hardwood floors. First, we evaluated the setup of each vacuum by timing how long it took to assemble from the moment of opening the box. Next, we ran each vacuum on the lowest setting until the battery ran out and recorded its runtime (the Hoover Onepwr Evolve Pet Cordless Vacuum had the longest runtime out of all the vacuums on our list). We then fully recharged the battery and repeated the test, this time setting the vacuum to its highest speed. During these tests, we also used a decibel reader to measure the noise level of each vacuum on the highest and lowest settings. We also took note of whether the vacuum would remain standing when leaned against a wall or if it was too top heavy to stay upright.

To evaluate the effectiveness of each vacuum on hardwood flooring, we used each to suck up a combination of Cheerios, coffee grounds, and popcorn kernels and then again to suck up wig hair. We then combined all the debris, and sprinkled it over a path that we outlined using tape. During this part of the test, we evaluated each vacuum’s maneuverability, considering its ability to pick up debris from corners, edges and tight spaces. We also evaluated the portability of the vacuums by using their crevice tools (when applicable) to clean torn up cotton balls from a high shelf. We also used the crevice tool or upholstery attachment (for those vacuums that have one) to clean debris from an upholstered chair.

Finally, we evaluated the emptying process of each vacuum by emptying it into the garbage can or by removing the bag. For vacuums with washable filters (like our best overall pick, the Dyson Omni-Glide+), we made sure to clean those as well. After the testing was complete, our testers received the retail price of each vacuum and scored its overall value considering both its price and its performance. We will be sending these cordless vacuums home with real-world testers who will continue to provide feedback as they use them in their own homes.

How to Shop for Cordless Vacuums for Hardwood Floors Like a Pro

Brush Roll

While a spinning brush roll is great for agitating carpet fibers, when used on hard surfaces, it can spread debris around and even scratch your hardwood floors if the bristles are too coarse. “The most important thing to remember is to disengage your vacuum’s beater bar when cleaning hardwood floors,” says Lightfoot.

Thus, you should look for a vacuum with an on/off switch for the brush roll, so you can turn it off as needed for hardwood floors. Some vacuums may include no brush roll at all or separate attachments intended for cleaning hard floors. If you plan to use your vacuum to clean both hardwood floors and carpet, then a switch that allows you to turn off the brush roll (or at least lower the speed) may be most convenient for transitioning between floor types.

Weight and Bin Capacity

Cleaning high-pile carpet can sometimes require a heavier vacuum to help lift deeply embedded dirt from the carpet fibers. But if you’re looking for a cordless vacuum primarily for hardwood floors, you’re better off going with a lightweight model that’s easy to maneuver and carry up and down stairs. The eufy HomeVac H30 Infinity is the lightest of all those on our list at just 1.8 pounds. The trade-off of lightweight cordless vacuums is that they usually come with a smaller dustbin, which means you’ll need to empty them more frequently.

Runtime

Although some manufacturers claim that their cordless vacuums have a runtime of up to 60 minutes, we found most of the vacuums in our testing to range between 20 and 45 minutes of runtime when used on the lowest setting. The median runtime out of all those we tested was 33.5 minutes on the lowest setting.

Attachments and Accessories

Most of today’s cordless vacuums come with a number of attachments for cleaning various surfaces. Common attachments include crevice tools for getting into hard-to-reach places, upholstery tools, and pet tools for tackling stubborn pet hair. When choosing a cordless vacuum for hardwood floors in specific, be sure to look for vacuums with floor heads designed for use on hardwood floors (unless it already comes with an on/off switch that can turn off the spinning brush roll). Some vacuums even come with a mophead attachment, too.

More Cordless Vacuums for Hardwood Floors to Consider

Belife Cordless Vacuum: This compact vacuum was easy to use and fit nicely under tight spaces in our testing. It also comes with several attachments and doubles as a handheld vacuum. However, it did struggle a bit when transitioning between hardwood floors and carpet.

Miele Triflex HX2 Cat & Dog Cordless Vacuum: This cordless vacuum from Miele did well enough on hardwood floors, but it was the most expensive cordless vacuum we tested, and we think there are better options for the price.

Questions You Might Ask

Is it better to vacuum or sweep hardwood floors?

“Either method is effective for cleaning your hardwood floors, as long as you have a soft floor attachment for your vacuum,” says Lightfoot. Vacuuming hardwood floors is generally less labor intensive than sweeping. But which vacuum you use matters: If your vacuum has a hard-bristled, spinning brush roll that cannot be turned off, you’re better off sweeping to avoid damaging your floors—this applies to cleaning laminate wood floors as well.

How often should you vacuum hardwood floors?

The NWFA recommends “sweeping with a broom or using a soft microfiber dust mop on wood floors on a daily basis, and then using a vacuum on the bare floor setting once a week or as necessary,” says Miller. “Every month, use a cleaning product made specifically for the finish on the floor, for a deeper clean, which is something your flooring professional can provide or recommend to you.” Those with pets or kids will need to clean hard floors more often, according to Lightfoot.
