Etsy Says These Will Be the Most Popular Costumes and Decorations This Halloween
With Halloween a little more than a month away, the hunt for the perfect costume and home decor that strikes the right balance between creepy and cool has officially begun. While some Halloween classics are bound to resurface year after year—witches and black cats will never go out of style—other trends are as fleeting as the magical night. To help predict what will be the most popular costumes and home decor of Halloween 2017, Etsy’s trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson looked into her crystal ball to see what’s brewing. After analyzing top searches on Etsy.com, what makers are creating, and what’s hot right now in the wider market, she forecasted the top styles we’re destined to see on the 31st. While some are surprising (pretty pastels will replace the traditional orange-and-black), others are exactly what we’d expect (celestial looks inspired by the solar eclipse).
While orange and black is the quintessential Halloween color combo, this year, shoppers are opting for a sweeter palette: soft pastels. Etsy says that with the millennial pink trend still going strong, it’s no surprise that the candy-colored look has begun making its way into Halloween party decor and treats.

You might want to ditch the toothy jack-o’-lantern design this year: Etsy reports that pumpkins are going glam. Think luxe materials, like velvet, and chic finishes, like metallics. To get the look, choose intricate decals and metallic stickers that make this style achievable for even the least experienced DIYer.

Sure, spiders are a common Halloween motif, but this year, they’re appearing in more realistic representations (inspired by vintage scientific illustrations), and are getting metallic makeovers that seem more fit for a fairy tale than a haunted house. Don’t let these insects’ reputations fool you—they can look surprisingly stylish.

From clothing, to hair, to Starbucks drinks, the mermaid trend is showing up everywhere. So it’s no surprise that many Halloween costumes will be siren-inspired. With search on Etsy for “mermaid” up more than 20 percent from last winter, shoppers are looking for outfits that are scaled and shimmery.
