How to Craft a DIY Witch Broom in Minutes

Be the best-accessorized witch around with just a quick trip to the store and a few found supplies.

If you're planning to dress up as a witch (whether a DIY Halloween costume or store-bought one) this year, you're definitely going to need a sorceress' most important piece of arm candy: a broomstick. Rather than buy one from the party store like every other witch on the block, set yourself apart with this DIY witch broom, crafted in 5 minutes for less than $5. (The only things easier are our easy Halloween costumes.)

Start by gathering ordinary sticks and twigs from the woods or your backyard. Combine with an inexpensive bamboo pole and twine from the home improvement store for a magically simple DIY witch broom. The one we built is perfectly sized for a grown-up witch, but adjust to a child's size with a shorter bamboo pole or branch. Use this easy Halloween craft with other costume ideas, such as a "before" Cinderella, chimney sweep, pioneer, or colonist.

Supplies

  • Bamboo pole (available at most craft or hardware stores)
  • Small branches and twigs
  • Twine
  • Glue

Instructions

  1. Collect branches approximately 2 feet long. If necessary, snap longer branches to shorten them to about the same length.
  2. Gather branches in one hand and line up the ends on one side.
  3. Hold the bundle up to one end of the bamboo pole, wrap twine tightly around the branches and pole several times, and then secure with a knot.
  4. Add a dab of glue between the branches and pole to secure them in place, and let dry completely before flying off to the Halloween party.
