These Are the Top Holiday Trends for 2017, According to Etsy
It’s time to trim the tree and deck the halls, but before you do, Etsy is here to help with its first annual Holiday Trend Guide. After looking at the top searches within the holiday decor and gifting categories on the site, the online retailer listed the top home decor, gifting, and wrapping trends this year.
One common theme for 2017? Personalization. More and more people are searching for one-of-a-kind or customized items. “These holiday trends are all about making the season completely your own,” Etsy’s trend expert, Dayna Isom Johnson told Real Simple. “From personalized tableware to stockings that truly reflect your personality, this year’s holiday season is all about you (oh and the ones you love).”
Take a look at the top trends below, and get ready for the holiday season.
The New Classics
Your classic Christmas tree or advent calendar gets a modern update—think a cardboard “evergreen” (the clean-up will be so easy!). “Dust off the family heirlooms and give them new life by pairing them with fresh, modern pieces.” Isom Johnson says. “Consider adorning your door with your grandparents’ wreath while opting for a modern advent calendar, or incorporating vintage ornaments with a minimalist wooden tree.”
To buy: Brown Cardboard Laser-Cut Modern Cut-Out Christmas Tree, $122; cardboardchristmas.etsy.com.
People are looking to go bold with this mantel staple. Instead of the traditional red-and-white ones, customers are purchasing some in chunky knit, faux fur, and eye-catching patterns (like banana leaves or constellations).

Moody and Dark Tablescapes
Think outside the red and green palette when it comes to dreaming up your holiday table. Etsy says that matte black, crushed velvet, and dark tropical looks are already trending in home decor, but they’re here to stay for the festive season. You might see some dark and sophisticated looks at holiday dinners—think matte tableware, stonewashed linens, dried cranberries, and eucalyptus.
To buy: Linen Napkins in Dark Grey, $17 (for set of two); back2linen.etsy.com.
Deluxe Pet Gifts
Pets are getting pampered this holiday season. “One of the most exciting gifting trends this year is personalized presents for your pet.” Isom Johnson says. “From custom illustrations to personalized water bowls, shoppers are able to discover an extraordinary range of options to celebrate the furriest, four-legged members of the family.”

Celestial-themed gifts are one of the year’s top searches on Etsy. Luckily, Etsy sellers provide plenty of options with moon, stars, and zodiac themes on everything from candles to pillows to jewelry.

Whether you live where you grew up or miles away from it, it always feels good to show off your hometown pride. Gift your friends trinkets representing their home cities or states—there are so many personalized options out there like necklaces, prints, glassware, and candles.

Etsy also found that people are looking to treat themselves this year, too. “What’s most surprising—but, shouldn’t be!—is that shoppers are adding themselves to their holiday gifting lists this year,” Isom Johnson says. “More than ever before, shoppers are treating themselves this season because they know they deserve it. After all, there’s nothing more important than self-love.” So gift yourself a new outfit or accessory, or that big splurge you’ve been thinking about all year.
To buy: Leather Clutch, $78; anniebukhman.etsy.com.
You chose the perfect gift for your loved one, but don’t think it’s over just yet. It’s all about presentation. Get creative with the wrapping this year to really impress. And you don’t have to be a pro at wrapping gifts, either—Etsy has easy-to-assemble boxes or small trinkets to attach to gift bags and parcels.
