Maura’s 6 Favorite Ideas of 2012
1. Ravioli With Brussels Sprouts and Bacon
I was one of those people who firmly believed that she didn’t like Brussels sprouts, even though she’d never tried Brussels sprouts. This recipe shook that belief. (Full disclosure: I am also one of those people who firmly believe that bacon makes anything taste better. I remain firm in it.) With its medley of textures and tastes—bacon, pecans, little slivers of Brussels sprouts—this dish is incredibly delicious. Good-looking enough to serve to company, but it comes together in minutes. A winner.
2. Maybelline New York Color Sensational LipColor in Red ReVival
Call me a skeptic, but I just never believed that any one color could look good on every skin tone. One massive road test with dozens of my colleagues proved me wrong. My favorite find: Maybelline’s luscious red lipstick.
3. Daily Thought Quote: Thursday, November 22
Compelling words to begin with, but coming as they did on both Thanksgiving and the 49th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, I found them very moving.
4. Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn
It had been a long time since I’d picked up a mystery novel—there are other genres I prefer when I can relax with a book—but when I picked up this one, I couldn’t put it down. Twisting, turning, fiendishly clever. No wonder it was the read of the summer.
5. Old Navy Bird-Print Charmeuse Blouse
A sweet little shirt that just said “spring” to me, this ended up becoming one of my favorite purchases this year. Cute with jeans, office-appropriate when tucked into navy trousers, it never fails to win compliments. Even better, I got it on sale for $20.
6. How to Store Leftover Tomato Paste
Now, you may already know it—one woman’s oh! is another one’s duh—but this simple tip was a revelation to me, stuck as I’ve been in the past with extra tomato paste that I had no immediate use for. Don’t waste it; freeze it. A-ha!
