With so many options for cooling sheets, cooling comforters, and cooling pillowcases on the market these days, people who overheat at night can finally (and literally) create the sleep oasis they’ve been dreaming about—myself included.

I’ve already made the switch to these sheets that are always cool to the touch, but I can’t sleep without my trusty pillow that I’ve had for years. (PSA: You should change your pillow more often than I do.) I wanted my pillow to provide the same cool feeling that my sheets do but wasn’t ready to trade in my favorite just yet, so I decided to test out a cooling pillow cover. And let me tell you, the way I sleep has forever changed.

When I first heard about Slumber Cloud’s Nacreous pillow covers, which use the same technology as NASA space suits, I was a bit skeptical. But after testing them out, I know that they really do work to regulate your temperature and keep you cool throughout the night. These pillow covers essentially act like mini space suits for your pillows: They are made with two layers of Outlast temperature-regulating fabric that absorb heat, so any side of your pillow is always the cool side.

Outlast fabric is made up of thousands of microscopic beads called Thermocules that are set to a specific temperature to counter fluctuations, so as your body temperature adjusts, so do the pillow covers, always absorbing and storing excess heat to keep you at a comfortable temperature all night long. Pretty crazy, right? Plus, Outlast’s super soft viscose-based fabric is also made with cotton, so you won’t be sacrificing thread count for the cooling sensation. And with an easy-to-use zipper, the pillow covers can slip over any standard or king- size pillow.

As soon as I laid my head down on my pillow covered with Slumber Cloud’s cover, I could instantly feel a difference. Overnight, the pillow does stay fairly cool even after you’ve been sleeping on it for a while, so if you prefer a warm and cozy feeling, this might not be for you. But if you’re a hot sleeper looking for a more affordable alternative to investing in a new pillow, these cooling covers might be the best-kept sleep secret yet.
