Here's some inspiration for your morning run: The American College of Sports Medicine ranked 50 cities (based on data that included their suburbs) to find which had the healthiest, fittest citizens—and if yours didn't make the list, you might want to hit the gym. For the second year in a row, Washington, D.C. took first place, and California has four major cities that ranked in the top 10. To decide what made a city "fit," researchers focused on the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a health-related telephone survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Every year, the BRFSS interviews more than 400,000 U.S. adults and collects information about health-related behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services.
