We’ll never turn down classic hot dogs or s’mores on a summer camping trip. But if you’re looking to upgrade your campfire fare, there’s a genius tool that will help you do just that. It’s called the Pie Iron, but it makes way more than just pie.
The gadget, though far from new (the original Pie Iron was created in 1964), is re-surfacing thanks to the creative ways it’s being used by campers. Some models are made with cast iron and others aluminum, but all feature long handles (so you can keep a safe distance from the fire) and a round griddle that sits inside the flames. We love the cast iron version for its ability to retain heat, resulting in gorgeous sears and crispy edges. Plus, it’s only $14.
Though originally intended for grilling sandwiches and fruit pies over a campfire, the iron can be used for an endless variety of dishes. For breakfast, cook up a bacon egg and cheese or warm and gooey cinnamon rolls. Grilled cheese, quesadillas, calzones, hamburgers, and even cheesy tater tots can all be made in the Pie Iron for lunch and dinner. Cherry pie and strawberry shortcakes are tasty dessert options, but if you’re a sucker for s’mores, you can make a s’mores pie, too. Simply place a piece of buttered bread in the iron (butter-side down), top with marshmallows, chocolate, and crushed graham crackers, and finish with a second slice of bread, butter-side up. Alternatively, you can use pizza dough in place of bread. After five minutes in the hot coals, you'll have a deliciously melty s’mores pie.
