We Tried Starbucks’ New Mango Dragonfruit Refresher—Here’s the Lowdown
Starbucks is on a roll with new drinks this summer.
Ever since the OG pink drink came out, Starbucks has been unveiling new rainbow-colored drinks. The newest one: the Mango Dragonfruit Starbucks Refresher. Like the other Refreshers Starbucks makes, the Mango Dragonfruit is a fruity alternative to coffee; it has just as much caffeine as coffee, but it tastes, well, fruity instead.
Just like we tried the Serious Strawberry Frappuccino when it came out a couple of weeks ago, we had to get our hands on this new Refresher. Lucky for us, it was released nationwide today, so it was off to Starbucks for me to get a couple to try, along with my co-workers.
The Mango Dragonfruit Refresher comes two ways: regular, which is made with water, and as a ‘Dragon Drink,’ which is made with creamy dairy-free coconut milk instead of water. Both have real dragonfruit (also known as pitaya) pieces shaken in.
The first thing we noticed about the Refresher is how stunning the color is. Dark bright pink from the dragonfruit, you can see the seeds floating around from the fruit pieces. The ‘Dragon Drink’ is opaque due to the coconut milk, and much lighter in color, but also very visually pleasing.
I'm not normally a fan of sweet drinks, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the refresher. It was sweet without being overpowering, and the mango flavor came through. We decided overall it tasted a little bit artificial, but was good for an afternoon pick-me-up.
I was more nervous to try the ‘Dragon Drink’ variation. I didn’t think mango, dragonfruit and coconut should all be in one drink together. However, I liked this one even more than the original Refresher since the coconut milk’s fattiness cut through the sweetness of the drink and balanced the flavors out. I could definitely see myself ordering one on a hot summer day as an alternative to my normal iced green tea lemonade.
No matter your usual Starbucks order, both Mango Dragonfruit Refreshers are good options if you're looking to spice things up and try something a little more exotic. They are both available nationwide starting today, June 19.
