Trader Joe's Isn't Open on New Year's Day, So Grab These Hosting Must-Haves ASAP

Who doesn’t love macarons?!

If you're hosting a New Year's Eve or New Year's Day party this year, you'll be happy to know that, as with most holidays, Trader Joe's has plenty of appetizers, main courses, and desserts to choose from. Not only are these foods tasty and much less expensive than going out to a fancy restaurant for the holiday, they also make your hosting duties much easier and more enjoyable.

For example, TJ's is currently selling a seasonal truffle pesto that can work as a crostini topper for an elegant appetizer, or can be mixed with a bowl of pasta for a simple, yet decadent main course. And when it comes to dessert, Trader Joe's has local favorites as well as a box of luxe French macarons, which are almost amazing enough to transport you to the streets of Paris.

If you plan on heading to your local Trader Joe's to stock up on New Year's entertaining essentials, however, beware that all TJ's outposts across the country are scheduled to have abbreviated hours for the final holiday of the year. More specifically, all TJ's locations will close at 5 p.m. local time on New Year's Eve, and will be completely closed on New Year's Day—January 1, 2022.

Entertaining Cracker Duo

This item literally has "entertaining" in the name, so you know it's a party must-have. Each box of this seasonal product contains two types of crackers. The cheese and black pepper wafer crackers are "delightfully crispy" and make excellent vehicles for dipping. The savory bites can also act as a base for DIY holiday appetizers, such as creme fraîche with salmon and dill. On the other hand, the flax seed-studded cracker crisps, which have an onion-forward flavor, are made to be served alongside a charcuterie platter. Since the box is a bit smaller than some of TJ's other offerings, it would be best suited for a small gathering.

Mushroom & Truffle Flavored Pesto

This versatile pesto works well on crostini if you're looking for an easy appetizer, but you can also pair it with some pasta if an elevated main course better suits your New Year's needs. This savory pesto is packed with "umami-imbued ingredients", such as romano cheese, portabella, cremini, and shiitake mushrooms, and white truffle oil. Pine nuts give the pesto a satisfying crunch, while finishing touches like chopped Italian parsley, sea salt, and black pepper, add a burst of flavor that will brighten every bite.

Got some space on your charcuterie board or antipasto platter? Fill it with these savory Spanish olives, which are pre-pitted and stuffed with piquant pimento peppers. The briny flavor of the olives and peppery notes of the pimento play off one another and pair exceptionally well with other foods, such as an aged Manchego or prosciutto and melon. Use any leftover olives as a garnish for a dry martini, or simply save 'em to snack on later.

Spatchcocked Lemon Rosemary Chicken

For a main course that's a bit heartier, pick up one of TJ's spatchcooked chickens. Since it's spatchcocked, the bird will cook faster than a standard roast chicken without sacrificing any of that irresistible juiciness. And yes, there will still be plenty of crispy skin to go around. What's more? Trader Joe's has basically done all the work for you. The chicken is already pre-seasoned—soaked in a brine with orange and lime juices, and marinated in extra virgin olive oil, vinegar, garlic, rosemary, parsley, and lemon slices—which means all you need to do is grill it or pop it in the oven. It doesn't get much easier than that!

If you're looking for a side that goes with just about any meat, fish, or poultry dish, you're going to want to give these rich scalloped potatoes a try. The heat-and-serve side couldn't be easier to prep, and tastes pretty darn delicious. The thinly sliced potatoes are smothered in a rich cream sauce flavored with garlic, leeks, and a mix of four different cheeses: Parmesan, Asiago, fontina, and provolone. In other words, this dish will definitely be a hit.

Brussels Sprouts Sauté Kit

For something a bit lighter, opt for one of TJ's popular sauté kits. This particular variety features shaved Brussels sprouts, shaved Parmesan cheese, roughly chopped hazelnuts, and a creamy lemon garlic vinaigrette. All you have to do to prepare this healthy side is toast the hazelnuts, sauté the sprouts, and mix in that flavorful vinaigrette. Then, top the salad with the toasted hazelnuts and shaved cheese.
