Dole Recalls Additional Packaged Salads and Lettuce in More Than 30 States Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

Dole has voluntarily recalled dozens of packaged salads and lettuce varieties due to a possible Listeria contamination. This recall, which was initiated on January 7, 2022, comes about two weeks after the popular brand recalled several dozen items nationwide (including many packaged salad and lettuce varieties) for the same reason.

This latest recall impacts Dole-branded and private label packaged salads processed at the company's Springfield, Ohio and Soledad, Calif. production facilities. The items, which were sold nationwide at retailers such as Kroger and HEB, include a variety of different lettuces, chopped salad kits, salad bowls, and more. Per an announcement from the FDA, iceberg lettuce contained in these products is responsible for the possible contamination.

The recalled products from the Ohio plant have a product lot code beginning with the letter "W" and a "Best if Used By" date between December 22, 2021 and January 9, 2022. Recalled items from the California facility have a product lot code beginning with the letter "B" and a "Best if Used By" date between December 23, 2021 and January 8, 2022. Consumers can find the product lot codes located in the upper-right-hand corner of the packaging.

The recalled salad items from the California facility were distributed in the following states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Maryland, North Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. Additionally, these salads were distributed in the following Canadian provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.

The FDA is urging consumers who still have any of these products in their refrigerators not to consume them, and discard them immediately. Additionally, Dole retailers have been advised to check store shelves and warehouse inventories to confirm that no recalled product is currently available for purchase.

This voluntary recall was issued after equipment used in the harvesting of the raw iceberg lettuce contained in the above products was tested by Dole and found to contain Listeria monocytogenes. Though no illnesses related to this recall have been reported to date, Listeria is especially dangerous for pregnant women, the very young, the elderly, and the immune-compromised. Listeria symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea, or other gastrointestinal ailments.

Per the announcement from the FDA, no other Dole products, including fresh fruit and field-packed fresh vegetables, are part of these voluntary recalls. In other words, those items are safe to consume. The recall from last month included similar products, but those items were processed at Dole's facilities in Bessemer City, N.C. and Yuma, Ariz.
