Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods Market was finalized Monday, August 28—and this means immediate price drops on a selection of the mega-retailer’s best-selling grocery staples. Included on this list are organic bananas, avocados, apples, greens, fish, ground beef, and nut butters.
While other major grocers may offer more affordable produce, the quality of Whole Foods Market has traditionally nudged certain consumers to pay a higher price, especially for organic items. With the recent price drops, here are the organic products you should purchase at Whole Foods.
Apples are repeated offenders on The Environmental Working Group’s annual list of the Dirty Dozen. This year, more than 98 percent of apple samples (among other fruit) tested positive for residue of at least one pesticide. Organic apples have fewer pesticides and are one of the produce items recommended to purchase organic. Both Gala (in season now) and Fuji (in season starting October) apples will undergo price drops at Whole Foods and are worth seeking out.

Avocados are one the cleanest fruits (only 1 percent of samples showed any detectable pesticides in 2017), thanks to their thick peel that protects the flesh from absorbing agricultural chemicals. Although it’s not necessary to buy organic avocados, some shoppers may notice improved quality and exceptional richness with the organic variety. If the price drops enough to match conventional avocados, go for the organic variety and see if you can taste the difference.
Organic Large Brown Eggs
Eggs are certified organic if they are from hens that receive only organic feed and live in a cage-free environment. They must also meet all standards set by the USDA National Organic Program.
