Craving s'mores but don't have a campfire within reach? No sweat: making s’mores inside is possible, and with National S’mores Day happening on Friday, August 10, it's also highly encouraged. The magical method below is extremely easy, and the clean-up happens to be a breeze. Plus, all you really need to make s'mores on National S'mores Day (or any day) is heat and three basic ingredients: graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows.
For the uninitiated, traditional s'mores are made by roasting marshmallows over an open fire, then sandwiching them between and two graham crackers with a slab of chocolate inside. But an open fire is not accessible for a lot of people, especially when you want your s'mores fix now. In Real Simple's July 2018 issue, we featured this simple method by our Food Director, Dawn Perry, for making s'mores inside by first creating packets, then cooking them in the oven.
How To Make S'mores In the House
Preheat your oven to 400°F. Toss 8 graham crackers with 8 large marshmallows and 4 1-oz. chocolate bars broken into pieces. Divide the mixture among 4 large pieces of aluminum foil. Now you have four packets of s’mores—seal each packet and place in a preheated oven until the chocolate melts, 5 to 10 minutes.

It appears the treat was a campfire staple way before Merriam-Webster dictionary officially recognized it in 1974: The first known s'mores recipe was published in the Girl Scouts handbook Tramping and Trailing With the Girl Scouts in 1927. The snack was originally called “some mores.”
