Kitchen safety tips often focus on things like avoiding hot oil splatters or mastering knife skills, but did you know that a slippery cutting board can be just as dangerous? A board that slides around the counter while you're chopping is an accident waiting to happen.

But you don't have to deal with a shifty work surface while you slice and dice. There's actually a trick to stabilizing your cutting board and making your prep work a lot easier. And thankfully, it's simple.

Keep your cutting board anchored with a cut-to-fit piece of rug pad or shelf liner. (The added cushioning also helps stabilize a slightly warped board.) Keep the pad dry so it doesn’t become mildewed, and if the pad traps food or spills, just wash in the top rack of the dishwasher as necessary.

P.S. If you’re really in a pinch and need stabilization stat, a damp paper towel will do the trick.
