You're just two ingredients away from flaky, buttery perfection.
The term "croissini" is intriguing on its own, but seeing "27 Layer Sesame Croissini" on Trader Joe's' website demanded my immediate attention. I had to know what the new creation was all about it.
I quickly learned a croissini is a cross between a French croissant with an Italian sesame grissini, or breadstick. According to Trader Joe's, it's made by twisting a stack of 27 rectangular strips of puff pastry into a variety of shapes, then covering them in sesame seeds and baking until golden.
The new item was inspired by Trader Joes' Product Innovator's trip to Athens, Greece, where she ate a version of the flaky, buttery pastry and was determined to re-create it. Instead of vegetable oil, she opted for butter (we approve).
Trader Joe's croissinis are available in the freezer aisle—just bake and serve. But making them yourself is even easier than taking the trip to the grocery store. Here's how to do it (with both sweet and savory options):
1. Heat oven to 425°F and line two baking sheets with parchment. On a parchment-lined work surface, roll 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry into a 10-by-14-inch rectangle. Brush with 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, gently flip, and brush second side with 1 tablespoon butter.
2. Using a pizza cutter, slice the dough into long 1-inch strips, then slice each strip in half. (They should measure about 1-by-7-inches.) Twist each strip into a spiral, arrange on prepared baking sheets, and bake until golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes.
For sesame croissini: Sprinkle with sesame seeds after brushing with butter.
For sweet croissinis: Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar, or brush with maple syrup instead of butter and sprinkle with brown sugar.
For savory croissinis: Brush with olive oil instead of butter and sprinkle with flaky salt and chopped fresh herbs, such as thyme or rosemary. Add crushed red pepper flakes for some heat. Or, top with grated Parmesan and lots of black pepper.
