Whether they’re piped to perfection and beautifully displayed or come out of the oven with a surprising twist, cakes seem to be having a moment. In fact, you’ll likely find us watching oddly satisfying cake decorating videos in our spare time, or researching the latest wedding cake trends on Pinterest (cheese wheel cake, anyone?!). But our latest obsession? Succulent cakes, which combine two of our favorite things: a tasty dessert and gorgeous plants and flowers.
Jakarta-based home baker Iven Kawi is the genius behind the cakes, who, along with her team of 12 female pastry chefs from Melbourne, Sydney, Seattle, Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, and Indonesia, bakes each one to order at her home. Although she doesn’t currently have a storefront, Kawi does have a cookie and cake baking line called Zoe Zo Bake, named after her two kids (Zoe and Keizo). Kawi posts her creations to her instagram account @ivenoven, which has amassed more than 300,000 followers.
The detail work on her cakes and cupcakes is pretty unbelievable. Unlike many cake decorators, Kawi doesn’t use fondant, but instead decorates solely with buttercream. She uses a Wilton pastry tip and a local Indonesian custom tip to pipe the intricate flowers, leaves, cacti, and more.
