This mix packs some of our favorite Southern-inspired flavors into one irresistible mix: Spiced pecans, meet Southern cheese straws. It’s a pretty spicy blend, and we like it that way, but if you’re heat sensitive you can always adjust the amount of Tabasco you use. Start with a tablespoon and increase from there. We like Duke’s Brand Shorty’s jerky for this, but thinly sliced dried chorizo would be delicious as well. Feel free to omit the meat for a vegetarian version, but we love its adult appeal.
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
¼ cup hot sauce (such as Tabasco)
¼ cup packed light brown sugar
2 large egg whites, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon Old Bay seasoning
1½ teaspoon dried oregano
2 cups Cheez-It crackers
2 cups Goldfish crackers
2 cups oyster crackers
2 cups toasted pecan halves
2 cups thinly-sliced dried sausage or beef jerky (optional)
How to Make It
Preheat oven to 275°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper, and coat with cooking spray.
Whisk together butter, hot sauce, brown sugar, egg whites, Old Bay, and oregano in a large bowl. Add crackers and pecans; gently toss to coat. Spread mixture in an even layer on prepared baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven until mixture is tacky but not moist, 25 to 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.
Transfer baking sheet to a wire rack; cool mixture completely, about 20 minutes.
Transfer mixture to a bowl. If using, add dried sausage; toss to combine.
