Spiced rum is the secret to this delicious drink because it adds depth and flavor with just one ingredient. If you really want a stand-out cocktail, it's easy to make your own spiced rum. Simply combine a bottle of rum with whole spices such as cloves, cinnamon sticks, allspice berries, black peppercorns, and star anise (fresh ginger is also a great addition). Store it in a large jar with a tight-fitting lid and let steep for a few days, shaking daily. When the flavor is to your liking, strain and bottle it, then put it to use in cocktails such as this one.
1 cup apple cider, divided
1 cup (8 oz.) spiced rum (such as Captain Morgan’s), divided
4 teaspoons fresh lemon juice (from 1 lemon), divided
1 cup apple kombucha
4 cinnamon sticks
Apple slices (optional)
How to Make It
Combine ½ cup apple cider, ½ cup spiced rum, and 2 teaspoons lemon juice in a cocktail shaker over ice; shake until chilled, about 30 seconds. Pour over large ice cubes into two rocks glasses. Repeat with remaining apple cider, rum, and lemon juice. Add ¼ cup apple kombucha to each glass. Garnish each with 1 cinnamon stick, and apple slices, if desired.
