A DIY trail mix is so much more delicious than what you can buy at the store. In this tasty sweet-and-crunchy sesame situation, there are three types of salted nuts—cashews, peanuts, and pistachios—plus crispy rice cereal for a satisfying texture to the sesame crunch that takes on an almost brittle-like personality. Egg whites might seem like an unusual addition, but they’re the key to making the sesame-and-crispy rice cereal crunch be what it should be, crispy. Sesame seeds and golden raisins take the flavor profile up a notch from the standard trail mix. Cooking tip: keep an eye on the batch while baking—the sesame brittle can go from pale to dark golden brown quickly.

How to Make It

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350°F. Whisk egg whites in a large bowl until frothy and almost doubled in size, 1 to 2 minutes. Whisk in sesame seeds, sugar, and salt. Fold in cereal and stir gently to coat.

Step 2

Using a rubber spatula, spread mixture in a thin layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake until mixture is golden and dry to the touch, 12 to 14 minutes. Let cool completely on sheet; break into 1-inch pieces.

Step 3

Toss sesame crunch with cashews, peanuts, pistachios, and raisins in a large bowl.

Step 4

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 month.
