Made it for the first time and it is delicious! Very easy! I found it very sour so I added a heaping teaspoon of sugar. Also took a little longer to simmer and thicken but that is not an issue. I could not really taste the cardamom so probably next time would add a little bit more.
We loved this recipe. I made it for Thxgiving but had no cardamom so substituted a mix of cinnamon, ginger and all spice. (You could also substitute ground cloves for the all spice.) It was a little thick so on the second batch I added a little more water.

@Debs, I think the cardamom is just to add another interesting flavor. It might be a little flat without it, but I wouldn't consider it necessary if you don't like it. Ginger might be a pretty good alternate.
