This chocolate chip ice cream recipe calls for an ice cream maker, which helps eliminate large ice crystals from forming and clumping together. This extra processing creates a smoother texture in the finished product.

You can also make homemade ice cream without a machine. Or, to avoid the extra prep, start with a blank vanilla ice cream and add mix-ins from there.

  • 2 cups heavy cream

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • ½ cup sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
