When you’re working remotely, the best place to start building a foundation for success is your workspace—whether it’s a proper home office, a spare bedroom, or even one side of the kitchen table.
To help curate the perfect environment for you, we asked HGTV Interior Design Expert Tiffany Brooks to provide inspiration for three workspaces for three different work personalities: a creative spirt, a wellness warrior, and a modern minimalist. Read on to find great picks available at your local Staples store that you can use to create your own personal setup.
Just because you’re an expressive person who doodles instead of taking notes doesn’t mean you can’t have a functioning, organized workspace. Brooks suggests using your crafting skills to organize your space—try using colorful washi tape to mark off spaces to hang things like your clipboard or calendar, or string up tension wire to hang projects or clip notes. And feel free to experiment with color—grab some patterned journals and vibrant Post-Its, add a pop of teal with a pencil holder, treat yourself to a bright green braided extension cord.
“Hang floating shelves to display postcards, a draping plant, a memento from traveling”
Don’t deny your desire to decorate and show off your personality—just do it with intention. “Hang floating shelves to display postcards, a draping plant, a memento from traveling,” Brooks says. “All of these things are very curated, but very meaningful.” And go ahead and take a break from the computer to access your creative thinking. Brooks suggests having some crayons or Sharpie pens on hand to draw things out, or a productivity cube to keep you focused on one task at a time. “They give you a little break in the workday so you can express your creativity instantaneously,” she says. And remember to set up a Ring Light so your space looks as good on screen as it does in real life.
If you are all about wellness, you need to create a space that’s inviting both virtually and in reality—and which incorporates products that help support your health throughout the workday. That means taking a holistic approach to your design, thinking about things like scent as well as appearance, and adding thoughtfully designed items like an ergonomic sit/stand desk and a water bottle that reminds you to hydrate. Wellness Warriors “love to have living things on their desks,” says Brooks. “And possibly some aroma therapy.” Find an essential oil that makes you feel calm and productive. “There are tons of different scents that help you focus and stay balanced throughout the day,” she says.
“It’s important to have pictures of friends and family to maintain balance and work”
Brooks recommends leaning into a color palette of greens, whites, and natural tones like bamboo and cork, and choosing office supplies made of recycled materials and metals. And be sure to maintain mental wellness with your décor as well. “Include something that would keep you feeling positive during the day—like a scrolling picture frame,” Brooks says. “It’s important to have pictures of friends and family to maintain balance and work—and remind you that you actually have a life outside of it.”
As a small business owner herself, Brooks likes to use her home workspace to prioritize what needs to be done. She thrives on lists and lives by the “today pile” on her desk. The Modern Minimalist, Brooks says, “only has what they need to put them in the mood to work—only things that they need to function and relax.” Think: a simple, sharp-line desk lamp, a file sorter, a wireless mouse, noise-canceling headphones, and decorative paper clips.

These Modern Minimalists, Brooks says, tend to have just one really good pen or pencil on their desk, and rely on electronic tools to maintain order—possibly making an exception for a multi-use clipboard or a day planner. If this sounds like you, put these items on your list (we know you have a list!) and head for your local Staples Store to stock up.
